India Jai Ho Fund

As the ‘little film that could’, the multi-award winning Slumdog Millionaire could teach hedge fund managers a thing or two about the road to success.
Not only did the film’s protagonist rise from the depth of the slums of Mumbai to financial greatness, courtesy of the Indian version of ‘Who Wants To Be a Millionaire’, but the film itself also amassed an impressive $377m, not to mention eight Oscars, on a relatively small budget of $15m.
It’s a message the founders of the Helios India Jai Ho Fund – named so after ‘Jai Ho’, the main theme song of the aforementioned cinematic treat – have clearly taken to heart.
Launched in 2009 by hedge fund firm Helios Capital Management, the fund seeks to purchases under performing shares of Indian companies which have strong long-term growth prospects.
“We want to find slumdogs from the Indian equity markets that have the potential of becoming millionaires,” Samir Arora, founder of Singapore-based Helios Capital and former chief investment officer of Alliance Capital Mutual Fund, said at the time of the launch.
