Investors Pour $2.7M into Monsoon Capital Fund

BETHESDA, Md. — According to an SEC filing, a hedge fund sponsored by Monsoon Capital, LLC has raised $2.65 million.
Monsoon India Opportunity Fund LP attracted five investors. In two 2008 offerings, the fund had raised $3.2 million.
Bethesda-based Monsoon Capital was started in 2004 by Gautam Prakash, who was previously an advisor to ChrysCapital, the Delhi-based private equity funds. He was also a partner at Bessemer Venture Partners. Prakash began with $4.9 million from family and friends.
According to its Web site, Monsoon Capital is the adviser to onshore and offshore private investment partnerships and specializes in equity investments in India. Investors include institutions (endowments, foundations, pension plans), family offices, and high net worth individuals primarily in the United States, Europe, and Asia.
Prakash is the sole individual named in the filing.
Earlier this year, reported that Monsoon Capital’s India Inflection Funds, after a meteoric rise in 2007, plummeted in the first months of 2010. Monsoon reportedly later closed the funds.
